Borrow or Steal: Georgine Spring/Summer 2017 NYFW

Women, Fashion, Runway

Designer Georgine Ratelband seized the opportunity to pay homage to her mother, and to her wardrobe, during her recent showing at New York Fashion Week. In place of the typical show notes, Ratelband opted for an open letter to her mom, saying, “I love these pieces because when I wear them, I’m reminded of you. I might make some alterations to them or wear them in different ways you ever would, but everyone always comments on how chic they still look.”

The classics here – a sequin dress, trench coat and lace dress – were at the heart of a collection that told the story of a daughter raiding her mother’s closet, adding her own personal style with embellishments and spunky styling choices. Playing up the uptown glamour of her mother’s favorites with her own particular downtown edge, the girl was depicted with punk-rock edginess, in Ratelband’s unique brand of quirky elegance, adding string ties and large safety pins as decorations, and carelessly slouching her coats off the shoulder. In the end, this is a collection of bold fun and respectful homage, one that’ll have you wanting to borrow or steal this age-old tale and the garments it inspired.
