The Sight of Sound: Angelys Balek Spring/Summer 2017 NYFW

Women, Fashion, Runway

An artist before anything else, Angelys Balek made her Spring/Summer 2017 NYFW debut in a painterly fashion. Translating her own art into garment prints, the Thai-American designer softens acidic ’80s hues with low-key textiles like cotton linen blends. Including both abstract whirlwinds of color and more recognizable landscapes, her imagery conjures up the secondary sense of sound. The turbulent gown with ruffles down the sides seems to rustle with television static, while the frock with tasseled waveforms channeled the crash of white noise. A collection of sensory stimulants, it’s the cut of Balek’s clothes that provide order and calm. Her tailored lines are, for the most part, crisp and easy to read. Even with the addition of a ruffle or asymmetric hem, her clothes remain poised and refined.
