Into the Abyss: Katie Gallagher Spring/Summer 2017 NYFW

Women, Fashion, Runway

It’s over the blackest of nights which Katie Gallagher lays her claim. The designer’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, shown at New York Fashion Week, didn’t have any of the usual springtime tropes; not a floral or a pastel touched the runway. Instead, for the third season, Gallagher created an all-black collection, choosing instead to focus on rich textures and Gothic detailing.

The collection was mused after the idea that black, the darkest shade, represents both the full absorption and the complete absence of light, evil and elegance. Sheer was the spotlight of the collection: with everything from tulle polka-dot trousers and tops to bouncy ballerina skirts to full-sheer figure hugging dresses. Slips of skin were revealed in every look: even in looks absent of the sheer tulle and mesh that acted as the star of the collection, garments were designed with cutaway details and styling to show off sumptuous slivers of skin. Drawing in her fascination with Gothic architecture and Catholic rituals, the light, flirtatiousness of the pieces were grounded with heavy lace finishings, silver zippers, and embroidered crosses.
