Metropolitan Mindset: Berthold Spring/Summer 2017 Runway

Men, Fashion, Runway

Sunny summer days may still be upon us, but Berthold’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection appears to indicate otherwise. The London-based brand pays homage to the city’s characteristically gloomy weather with a focus on outerwear. Featuring sleek, feather-light materials, duster coats and bomber basics add an element of depth to the collection without making it seem too heavy. The men’s line also boasts pieces far cheerier than a typical English skyline with bright pops of color and unconventional silhouettes.

Never one to play to fleeting trends, Berthold’s collection is driven by innovation rather than commercialism. Two piece ensembles are made whimsical by the inspiration behind them: Anish Kapoor’s Ascension (Red) installation of a red dust cloud at New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Meanwhile, billowing trench coats take on grand proportions to emulate a French army cavalry coat the designer found at a Los Angeles flea market. Other standout pieces include asymmetrical vests and oversized suede trousers, emphasizing not only the collection’s individuality but its overwhelming comfort factor. Ultimately, the appeal of Berthold’s collection is enough to convince us to slip into sturdy leather strap sandals courtesy of a Dr. Martens collaboration, even if it is raining outside.
