A Study on Manhood: Susang Hwang Graduate Lookbook

Fashion, Lookbook, Collections

Susang Hwang, one of Central Saint Martin’s expertly honed graduate students who showed earlier this year during their BA fashion show, unveiled his recently shot lookbook. Through the moody B&W portraiture, we’re better able to glean Hwang’s unique design ethos and aesthetic . Just in case you forgot, the Korean designer’s loose and deconstructed take on menswear earned him Samsung’s Fashion Design Fund Award as well. Looking at the designs themselves, it’s easy to see why: the sleeveless blazer layered over the pattern-cut top felt sensitive and morose, a complete contrast to the streamlined outerwear with fractal-like motifs. The enlarged shirt-cuffs were the most memorable, fixing themselves as closures on jackets and coats.

Given this carefully curated lookbook. Hwang seems intent on delving within the sociological construct of masculinity. Shots of his own designs are supplemented with photographs of tattooed boys and a painting of a suited gentleman: completely different in mood, but still linked together by that enigma we call gender. Make no mistake though, this isn’t some run-of-the-mill collection based on androgyny. We’ve seen too many of those. The collection does not incorporate femininity; the clothes are undoubtedly masculine. Rather, it looks to the innumerable facets of what makes a man a man.
