Tattooed Beauty: MinSu Kim Graduate Collection

Men, Fashion, Lookbook, Collections

From the culture of criminal tattoos in Russia to the tribal affiliations inked on Native Americans’ bodies, the significance behind symbols and memories are irremediably impressed within the skin. It is a metaphorical representation of the idea of being scarred and the beauty that can be found from pain.

Experiencing with MinSu Kim’s own hands the magic of a tattoo artist, she apprenticed herself at Black Fish Tattoo in New York. This gave her the right skills in order to freestyle tattoo all of the leather pieces of her collection without involving stencil work. Gloomy romance and a ’70s glam rock vibe runs throughout the garments, all of which is worn by the charming tattooed model and Blackfist Label brand founder, Bradley Soileau. Leather is the cornerstone of the entire collection: strong patchwork adorns a moto jacket with freehand irezumi designs, matched with drawstring patent pant made of the same fabric. A black goat-fur coat and velvet blazer add a dandy touch that highlights a certain elegance to the otherwise rebelliousness of the tattoo. The dark palette is mitigated by traces of burgundy and petroleum blue, while hand-sewn floral motifs light up a waistcoat and jacket. Layers and long-cuff shirts contribute to the disordered but stylized aesthetic. Details are no less important: from studded lace tied around the neck to lengthy taupe scarves and a black belt with metal buckle. After the notorious use of Terry Richardson’s tattooed arms in Valentino ad campaigns, MinSu Kim offers us a new perspective on how tattoos can be incorporated in the great world of fashion, bringing its own traditional significance and a cool look at the same time.
