Silken Dreams: Michael Sontag Fall/Winter 2016 Lookbook

Women, Fashion, Lookbook

When you were young, nothing seemed more glamorous than the dress you made out of your parents’ bedspread — the kind that trails along the ground and slips off your shoulders. In a similar way, Berlin-based designer Michael Sontag designs with a child-like affinity for billowing fabric, draping materials over mannequins to shape into romantic collections.

When the fabric is free to fall, fold and bunch, the pieces look effortless and sensual, as seen in Sontag’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection. Silk trousers pile at the ankles and wide sleeves flutter from the wrists.  So delicate that it seems with one small pull, the whole look might slip down or fall apart. But the same collection that swaddles these goddesses also goes so far as to incorporate menswear influences. Cut low on the hips with a straight fit along the waist, the taupe suit is freeing and doesn’t confine the body. Smooth and silky textiles in cool tones don’t compete with the silhouettes of the garments for attention. Instead, they only accentuate the fluid shapes of Sontag’s collection. Expertly tailored, the gold dress is a knock-out, its asymmetrical hemline allowing for full and graceful strides.
