Awkward and gangly, Steven Tai knows his girl well. One of the first names on London Fashion Week’s roster, steventai took us to a charming playground for his Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Collared shirts layered underneath pinafores were a recurring look, as were torn and frayed edges. Pussy bows, always a cute detail in womenswear, were refashioned across tops and skirts for a ruched effect. While the twee schoolgirl aesthetic is a shoe-in for Tai, his incorporation of more masculine silhouettes was a welcome surprise. The cropped jacket and trouser in a ribbed gray material felt just as appropriate as the frock in blue gingham. Placing his girls in a strange Victorian wonderland, these looks would have been equally fitting for Alice, the White Rabbit and all of their most whimsical, fashion-forward friends.
