The devil is in the detail for Chris Gelinas. For the New-York based designer’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, shown at New York Fashion Week, Gelinas showed off his aptitude for creating intellectual clothes. His line, CG by Chris Gelinas, has come up in the industry for Gelina’s knack for razor-sharp precision. Every stitch, every pleat, is carefully schemed. These aren’t clothes for the girl who throws things on in the morning. He creates clothes for the woman who wants to feel something. Who wants clothes to be an extension of herself. His collection is probably best articulated through Gelina’s opinion that clothes should make you feel confident. Precisely curated two-piece suits – one a double breasted short suit with an almost mathematically perfect construction. The other, an elevated work jacket and matching short in a dizzying graphic pattern showed off the designer’s ability to flirt with fun.
And of course, in true Gelinas fashion, there was an army of tailored frocks. Mod-length minidresses were colourblocked in bolder black and whites contrasted with subdued hues of faded pink and green. A simple shift was taken up a notch with a floor-dusting car wash skirt. A stretch jersey gown hung languidly, but sensually on Gelina’s muses. A pale peach jacket and skirt set shown like gossamer. It was a collection designed to make the wearer feel lighter than air, and it did just that.
