There’s something unique in the way Malaysian designer Jonathan Liang makes contemporary luxury appear entirely wearable for even the roughest of streets. His seasonal inspirations range from the ultra-conceptual to the more obvious (this season taking notes from the Nordic foraging culture) for a one-of-a-kind experience, both texturally and creatively.
For his Spring/Summer 2017 collection, the Paris-based designer relied on his inspiration of choice and an undeniable love for floral embroidery (a design aesthetic that threads through his collections season after season) for a look that evokes wild flowers and the beautiful-yet-tough survival instincts needed in the city jungle; the environment truly comes to life in his mossy green hues and bright floral embroideries.
Recently revealing the collection on the runway in Kuala Lumpur before again showing his work in Paris come October, Liang contrasts the luxury of embroidery with urban-street styling choices: layering bright bra tops under sheer dresses embroidered with elderflowers and poppies; cutting out a peplum effect on several knees of dresses; adding adjustable grosgrain ribbons to loose-hanging pleated skirts (for function and aesthetics).
The collection showcased his high level of standards and an often-unparalleled attention for exploring unique fabrication – highlighted in his recurring tulle embroidery and fine silk organza to even your more basic French terry. This season makes for a solid case on why quality and craftsmanship make perfect companions on the street. Jonathan Liang’s designs are sophisticated, youthful and even sometimes #OTT (“over the top”), but he always has a specific look in mind. And we’ve wholeheartedly fallen in love.
