The Mean Reds: Som Kong Fall/Winter 2016

Women, Men, Fashion, Lookbook

We’re feeling the mean reds with Som Kong’s latest Fall/Winter 2016 looks – but not your classic Audrey Hepburn version of “the mean reds.” Far from deep melancholia, Kong’s vibrantly warm-hued autumnal options evoke strength and energy – an excellent example of the very color and fabric manipulation taking strides as the designer’s increasingly signature aesthetic.

Wearable and at once bold and body-conscious, the recent Ryerson University fashion design graduate’s true-to-form range of separates was cool, relaxed and easy to pair and layer. Risking the opportunity to appear dull or monotonous with an all-solid set of offerings, Kong’s dedication to red paid off with pleated dungarees paired perfectly with a matching long-sleeve shirt.

Later, he showcased his knack for meticulously engineering garments with a form-fitted turtleneck cropped top and its accompanying skirt. His obvious and streamlined seams made for an instant frontrunner in the collection’s cool factor, but the way in which he concealed and revealed the female form was a close second.

Where some garments sculpted the body, others revealed: the plunging v-neckline of one blazer dress, the midriff-reveal of a bandeau top. This season Kong has much to say on the limitless variations found within a single hue, and his ability explore this with an obviously well-honed balance guarantees he’s certainly a designer to watch. Stay tuned and aware, because you’ll be seeing more and more of this young designer in seasons to come.
