The spell Maikel Tawadros put us under at the designer’s Spring/Summer 2017 show has us feeling intoxicated. The collection, shown at Copenhagen Fashion Week, was a sumptuous mix of the glamour of a 1970’s Pirelli girl and a dash of teenage rebellion. Silk and satin were mainstays: done in sheening pajamas and flowing silk dresses. Sheer dresses and skirts didn’t just show us slips of skin, but revealed miles of skin under yards of silky sheer mesh and chiffon. Rust and black silken suits were completed with the texture of burnished metal. Dressing gowns served as dresses, with the only thing keeping them together being a sash of silk. Even though the collection oozed sensuality, it never bordered tawdry. Tailoring was precise; showing of Tawadros’s mastered knowledge of historical tailoring paired with luxurious fabric choice. It was a collection that empowered and highlighted the female form, but still left us wanting more.
