We Are the Microcosm: “Cosmic Trash” Ekaterina Tkachenko Editorial

Women, Men, Fashion, Lookbook

Ever wonder what it would look like if fashion took place in outer space? Italian designer Ekaterina Tkachenko attempts to answer this question by offering audiences a glimpse into her wayfaring mind with her premiere collection “Cosmic Trash.” Part interstellar chic and part Japanese samurai, Tkachenko’s collection is an eclectic mix of both worldly and other worldly references.

The collection articulates its one-of-a-kind aesthetic through an attention to quirky textile fabrics and peculiar garment shapes. Tkachenko takes creativity to its outer limits with an almost childlike abandon, utilizing materials such as fake silver crocodile-skin applique’ stars and fox fur printed on cotton. Bold amounts of volume amp up this unconventional approach to style, while psychedelic prints emblazoned with human faces create an element of whimsy, indicative of a particular Asian flair.

Still, despite its eccentricity, the collection maintains a sophistication that contradicts its tongue-in-cheek title. Intending to mirror a range of man-made objects – from old satellites to spent rockets that have disintegrated in space – the line also suggests that humans, in their ultimately fleeting lives, are all merely reduced to the “junk” of the universe.
