Let’s just say that a generation of groove has been restored and we’re fantastically experiencing it. Not through memories of Stardust’s frisky beats or watermelon refreshers, but rather, in the form of platform oxfords, flared trousers and denim. Yet Jamie Wei Huang’s Resort 2017 Collection is more than the glamour that meets the eye. For Jamie Wei Huang self-titled brand, this collection was an expression of self.
Huang is consumed by an interest in opposing textiles – leather paired with athletic materials as denim juxtaposed fuzzy fabrics. In one look, a v-neck leather spaghetti-strapped tank top was paired with a full-length, leather-trimmed moss metallic skirt. The sight of its glittering posy-patches channeled some air of cool. But in all seriousness, this was a design made for the modern women. Similarly, a white trouser with red razor stripes and a matching red side-button leather smock demonstrated new boundaries on how a women’s work can stay relevant in a man’s world. Through clothing, gender stereotypes were breached.
Deconstruction of silhouettes such as on pullovers and in details of hems alike — all reveal that Jamie Wei Huang’s initiative with this collection, labeled “Sequel” has just begun.
