Clean-cut tailoring and classic silhouettes are a mark of trade for Chinese designer Wan Hung Cheung, whose eponymous label Wan Hung aims to reinvent luxury menswear through textile and print innovation. For his Spring/Summer 2017 collection, he has presented a tropical take on the urban experience, incorporating prints developed from the designer’s own acrylic paintings of the beaches in his hometown of Hainan (the “Hawaii of China”), topnotch tailoring and 3-D cutting. Reinforcing his collection with technically enforced cotton, rubberized plastics and Japanese tailoring fabrics, Wan Hung’s attention for fabrication and exploration in textiles results in unexpected details (such as small flourishes of embroidery and beading) and a collection showcasing the importance of placing innovation in the same regards as having strong design aesthetics.
