Curtis Oland creates a collection with a spirit home bound to the woodlands. The rustic nature of the landscapes and wildlife, rooted from Canadian identity, breathed life into his designs. For his Emerging Menswear Designer Award-winning Spring/Summer 2017 Collection, presented at Toronto Men’s Fashion Week, Oland channels his own sense of Canadian nostalgia.
Layered over a lime green button collared shirt, a monochromatic suit vest trimmed with feathers dangle at the waist just as fringe plays. Paired with navy shorts and brown lace-up work boots, the opening look ignites a fire passionate for adventure. In the same stride, a jumpsuit the color of cereal grain, with fringed pull strings, lead the collection into uncharted paths that searched to understand a uniform of dress laden with labor. In another look, a mustard colored pleated jacket accessorized with a waist tie the color of muddied leaves, a mock turtleneck top, and beige shorts. This expanse of clothes made with a colorful variety of earth tones and details are ready to take menswear into flight. It’s travel, a journey told through Oland’s bond to the Great White North.
