Thigh-high leather boots. Necklines that dropped low. Kohl rimmed eyes. These girls mean business. In Mark Kenly Domino Tan’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection, the designer contrasts nostalgic, structured silhouettes with a contemporary sensuality. Crafted from chiffons, and silks, and in contrast furs and suit fabrics, Tan’s collection found traditional feminine silhouettes – think ball gown skirts and tailored coats – were ramped up a notch with the addition of sky-high slits, over-the-top embellishments, and architectural details. More masculine silhouettes, such as pinstripe suits and military coats, reference Tan’s infatuation with midcentury pattern-making.
Fabric choice was eclectic: fur lined coats were paired with over-sized bows and silken trousers. Chiffon school girl blouses were paired with skirts that trailed far after the wearer has walked by. Pinstripe shirts were transformed into sultry dresses with sky-high slits. Tan’s deliberately skewed silhouettes and liberal fabrics made for a beguiling, but intoxicating collection.
